“In the Footsteps of Botev’s Detachment” is a march that has been held continuously since 1946. Every year, it gathers hundreds—and over the years, thousands—of Bulgarians remembering the deeds of the great revolutionary and his comrades. Enthusiasts set off from Kozloduy on May 27, with the goal of reaching Okolchitsa Peak, the site of the hero’s death. There, they attend the commemorations for the “Day of Hristo Botev and of Those Who Fell for the Freedom and Independence of Bulgaria.”
The march is classified as Category III difficulty. The route includes sites from the “Explore Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites” movement. Its total length is 120 km. All tourist associations in the country, as well as tourism clubs and sections, are entitled to participate with an unlimited number of tourists. Both individual participants and independent groups not belonging to a specific organization may also join the route.
This year is no exception. Over 800 people set off from Kozloduy on May 27. New groups took part in this year’s march, including representatives from the Vocational High School of Stonemasonry in the village of Kunino.
